This group of women from the south of Bogotá have been planting community gardens for almost 20 years. Their ecofeminist approach to food and body sovereignty, as well as there resistance to the oppressive structures of patriarchy and capitalism, have brought many micro political actions that they claim through their labor in the land, their communal approach to territory, and their work as a network of solidarity. Their work is included in my experimental film, Rizomas. I was able to work with them thanks to the support of the UCSD Center for Ibero and Latin American Studies through the 2020 Tinker Field Research Grant.

This children’s podcast focuses on climate, environmental, and social justice through the life of 4 beings — Wangari, Magnolia, Ramita, and Araña. The small community of friends live in the city of Nova Cali, a modern setting that is constantly adapting to the needs of the planet. Through their travels trough air and water, the friends learn about the many ecosystems and cultures around the world, and how to care for them and see their interconnectedness. The podcast was commissioned by the platform ‘El Árbol del Magnolio’, a Colombian arts & environment organization based in Medellin. The first season has five episodes that explore the wholeness of nature, urban approaches to energy and waste, the role of trees in carbon cleansing, the connexion between seeds, animals and the elements, as well as the importance of raising one’s voice for justice.
